Leaked NET Paper Was Sold On Dark Web, Encrypted Social Media Platform: CBI

The UGC-NET exam that was held on Tuesday had its question paper leaked 48 hours prior and sold on the dark web and encrypted social media platforms for Rs 6 lakh, according to sources in the CBI.

In response, the Education Ministry voided the exam, already under fire due to issues with the NEET-UG test, based on input from a federal anti-cybercrime unit.

The origin of the leak is still unclear, prompting the CBI to collaborate with the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers competitive exams, reported NDTV. The investigation will also examine the role of coaching centres, which many students attend at great expense to prepare for exams. CBI officers may conduct in-person visits to some of these centres.

On Thursday, the CBI registered its first FIR, accusing unidentified individuals based on the ministry's complaint, which indicated that the exam's integrity might have been compromised. Authorities believe a large-scale corruption racket is behind the leak, leading to an investigation of officials responsible for the exam, including those who set the questions.

The Education Ministry, already defending against Opposition's criticism over the NEET issues, stated that voiding the NET was necessary to maintain the exam's transparency and sanctity. Following the cancellation, students protested on university campuses nationwide, claiming they had reported the leak days before the exam, but no action was taken. Students at Lucknow University alleged that the leaked paper was available for Rs 5,000 and circulated via WhatsApp and Telegram groups from June 16.

The UGC-NET, is a qualifying exam for academic positions and fellowships in colleges and universities. Over 11 lakh students had registered for the exam. The NET and NEET controversies have led to furious protests from students and opposition parties, with the Supreme Court hearing petitions related to the NEET scandal.
