Who is Arun Goel?

A question started trending on the internet on Saturday evening after news of the election commissioner's resignation went viral. With only a few weeks left to the much-anticipated Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Arun Goel's resignation sparked a huge discussion and forced everyone to think over the circumstances and what could have been the reason for the election commissioner's resignation.

President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation and the announcement was made through the Government of India's official gazette notification.

Arun Goel, a retired 1985-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer hails from the Punjab cadre.

He assumed office as Election Commissioner of India on November 21, 2022. Notably, his appointment as election commissioner was always been in question citing procedural concerns, and a plea challenging his role was also filed in the Supreme Court. However, the Apex Court ruled judgment in his favor in August last year, and today, he has stepped down from his post.

The reason for his resignation has not been discovered yet.

Arun Goel was born on December 7, 1962, in Punjab's Patiala. He superannuated from the Ministry of Heavy Industry as a secretary after serving for more than 37 years.

During his tenure as Union Heavy Industries Secretary, Arun Goel pushed the E-vehicle movement by implementing Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes.

Before Arun Goel was appointed the Election Commissioner of India, he served as a district-level Election Officer in the Ludhiana and Bathinda districts of Punjab. Goel had conducted Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections in the past.

Former IAS officer Arun Goel is a post-graduate in Development Economics. He attained his education from Churchill College, University of Cambridge in England. Later, he trained at Harvard University's John F Kennedy School in the USA.
