Kerala Government Bars Scientists from Media Interaction on Wayanad Landslides
The Kerala government has urged the state's scientific community to avoid sharing their opinions and study reports on the Wayanad landslides with the media. Tiku Biswal, the state relief commissioner and principal secretary for disaster management, issued an order directing all science and technology institutions in Kerala to refrain from field visits to Meppadi panchayat in Wayanad, which has been declared a disaster-affected area.

In one of Kerala's most severe disasters, landslides triggered by heavy rain resulted in over 290 fatalities in Wayanad. Scientists from within and outside the state have linked the catastrophe to a combination of forest cover loss, mining activities in fragile terrains, and climate change. Biswal's directive to KP Sudheer, principal secretary in the state's science and technology department, emphasized the need for restraint.
Field Visits Restricted
The order specifically requests that all science and technology institutions in Kerala avoid conducting field visits to Meppadi panchayat. This area has been officially notified as a disaster-affected zone. The directive also states that any studies planned in this region must first receive permission from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.
"The scientific community shall be directed to restrain themselves from sharing their opinions and study reports to the media," Biswal's order stated. This measure aims to control the dissemination of information regarding the disaster and its causes.
Permission Required for Studies
If any research is to be conducted in the affected area, prior approval must be obtained from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. This protocol ensures that all studies are coordinated and managed appropriately.
The restriction on field visits and information sharing is part of a broader effort to manage the response to the disaster effectively. By controlling the flow of information, authorities aim to prevent misinformation and ensure that accurate data is used for recovery efforts.
The decision underscores the severity of the situation in Wayanad and highlights the need for coordinated efforts in disaster management. The state's approach reflects a cautious stance towards handling sensitive information related to natural disasters.
This directive comes as scientists continue to analyze the factors contributing to such catastrophic events. The interplay between environmental degradation and climate change remains a critical area of study.
The Kerala government's actions demonstrate a commitment to managing disaster response meticulously while safeguarding sensitive information. This approach aims to facilitate effective recovery and mitigate future risks associated with similar natural calamities.
The measures taken by Kerala authorities are indicative of a structured response strategy aimed at addressing both immediate and long-term challenges posed by natural disasters.
