Kerala Government Appeals to PM Modi for Changes to Fireworks Regulations Impacting Thrissur Pooram Festival
The Left government in Kerala has voiced strong opposition to a recent gazette notification from the Central government. This notification sets conditions for fireworks that could hinder the Thrissur Pooram festival. State Revenue Minister K Rajan, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed disappointment over the October 11 notification by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, highlighting its impact on festival enthusiasts.

K Rajan has requested the Prime Minister's intervention to amend these rules. He aims to ensure that the Thrissur Pooram can continue with its traditional festivities. One of the contentious points is Condition No 2, which mandates that licensed magazines be at least 200 metres from the display site. Previously, under the Explosive Rules of 2008, this distance was set at 45 metres.
Concerns Over New Fireworks Regulations
Rajan argues that increasing this distance is unnecessary and illogical. He believes it would make conducting fireworks displays nearly impossible. Additionally, Condition No 6 requires assembly sheds to be located 100 metres away from the display site. Rajan contends this is illogical since the shed remains empty during displays.
Another condition causing concern is Condition No 4, which demands a 100-metre gap between spectators and the display area. Rajan pointed out that enforcing this would hinder spectators' enjoyment of the fireworks. He suggested a more reasonable distance of 50-70 metres for spectators.
Efforts to Address Festival Concerns
Earlier discussions with reporters in Thrissur saw Rajan alleging attempts to undermine the Thrissur Pooram festival. He plans to bring this issue to relevant Central government officials' attention, including those from Thrissur. The state government will initiate official communication with the Centre under the chief minister's leadership.
Rajan emphasised that these new regulations could severely impact the festival's traditional celebrations. The state government is committed to ensuring that Thrissur Pooram retains its cultural significance and continues without disruption. The festival holds immense importance for both locals and visitors alike.
The Kerala government's efforts aim to preserve the essence of Thrissur Pooram while addressing safety concerns sensibly. By seeking amendments to these conditions, they hope to strike a balance between tradition and safety, ensuring that the festival remains a vibrant cultural event for all participants and spectators.
