JP Nadda Meets Kangana Ranaut Amid Row Over Her Farmer Protest Comments
In light of her recent controversial remarks regarding the 2020-21 farmers' protests, BJP Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut was summoned for a meeting with BJP president and Union Health Minister J P Nadda at his residence in Delhi on Thursday morning.
The meeting, which reportedly lasted about half an hour, was seen as a direct response to the backlash and discomfort her comments had caused within the party, especially as it prepares for key Assembly elections in states like Haryana.

As reported by The Indian Express, this summoning is widely interpreted as a stern warning from Nadda, reminding Ranaut to exercise caution in her public statements.
The timing of this meeting is particularly crucial as BJP is in the process of finalising its candidate list for the Haryana Assembly elections, and the party leadership is keenly aware of the potential impact of Ranaut's comments on their electoral prospects.
Ranaut's remarks, which have been a source of major embarrassment for BJP, came at a particularly sensitive time. Haryana was a central battleground during the farmers' protests, where farmers blocked roads to the national capital for a year, demanding the repeal of three controversial farm laws.
These protests only ended after Prime Minister Modi announced the withdrawal of the laws. With Haryana's Assembly elections just around the corner, many within the party are concerned that Ranaut's comments could damage the BJP's chances in the state, which has already seen a decline in BJP's performance-from holding all 10 seats in Haryana in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to just five seats in 2024.
Opposition parties have been quick to capitalise on Ranaut's controversial statements. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticised her, stating that she was elected to address the issues of her constituency, not to make inflammatory remarks.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu echoed this sentiment, condemning any disrespect towards the country's farmers. In Haryana, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers staged protests against Ranaut's remarks.
In her comments, Ranaut had said that if not for strong leadership, India could have faced situations similar to what happened in Bangladesh. She also claimed that the farmers' protests involved serious crimes like rape and murder and insinuated that foreign powers were behind a conspiracy against India.
These statements led BJP to quickly distance itself from her comments, issuing a stern statement that dissociated the party from her views.
Following the meeting with Nadda, Ranaut confirmed in an interview with India Today that she had been reprimanded by the party for her remarks.
She expressed acceptance of the party's stance, saying, "Of course I was reprimanded, and that's fine. It's fine with me. I do not think that I am the final voice. I have to be really crazy and stupid to believe that. I do believe in the guidance of my superiors. That's how every system works."
Ranaut, known for her outspoken and often controversial public statements, now faces the challenge of aligning her public persona with the party's strategies, especially as BJP navigates a critical electoral period with its eye on key state elections.
