A political row has erupted after AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi filed a complaint seeking criminal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a now-deleted video that was circulated on social media.

Owaisi files complaint over deleted video

On Monday, Asaduddin Owaisi lodged a complaint with city police demanding legal action against the Assam Chief Minister over a video that was briefly shared online and later deleted. The video, originally posted on social media by a political handle and later taken down, allegedly showed Sarma aiming a rifle and firing at two individuals.

According to Owaisi, the individuals shown in the video appeared to be Muslims, and the accompanying caption included phrases such as "point-blank shot." The Hyderabad MP alleged that the content promoted hatred and hurt religious sentiments.

In a statement shared on social media, Owaisi said that such content reflected a worrying trend. He described the video and its messaging as harmful and accused Sarma of making statements that could create divisions between communities.

In his complaint, Owaisi alleged that the chief minister's actions were deliberate and intended to provoke religious tensions and promote enmity between communities. He also claimed that similar remarks had been made by Sarma over the years through speeches, social media posts and public statements.

Himanta Biswa Sarma responds

Responding to the complaint, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he was not concerned about the case and would cooperate with any legal process. Speaking to reporters, he said he was ready to face arrest if required.

"I am ready to go to jail. If a case has been filed against me, they can arrest me. I have no objection," Sarma said. He also stated that he was not aware of any such video and maintained that he stood by his views on illegal infiltration.

The chief minister added that he would continue to speak against what he described as illegal Bangladeshi infiltration and would not change his stance on the issue.
