ITR Filing 2023: Over 6 Crore Income Tax Returns Filed So Far, Surpassing Last Year's Figures
The Income Tax (IT) Department on Sunday has reported a significant increase in the number of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed this year compared to the previous year.
As of 6 p.m. today, a total of 6 crore ITRs have been filed, surpassing the number of ITRs filed till 31st July last year.

In a tweet Income Tax department said over six crore ITRs for AY 2023-24 have already been filed till July 30th, this year.
''A new milestone! More than 6 crore ITRs have been filed so far (30th July), out of which about 26.76 lakh ITRs have been filed today till 6.30 pm! We have witnessed more than 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal till 6.30 pm, today. To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on 24x7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & social media. We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2023-24, to file their ITR at the earliest to avoid last minute rush,'' read the tweet.
The tax department has issued a reminder to those who have not yet filed their Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2023-24, urging them to do so at the earliest to avoid a last-minute rush.
No extension of the deadline for filing ITR
The government has clarified that there will be no extension of the deadline for filing ITR beyond July 31. Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra emphasized the importance of timely filing and expressed optimism that the number of filings would surpass the previous year. He thanked income tax return filers for their prompt response and advised them not to wait until the last moment or expect any deadline extensions.
In response to concerns about inoperative PANs due to non-linking with Aadhaar, the Income Tax Department specified that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign citizens should submit proof of their residential status to their jurisdictional assessing officer. This step will enable the operationalization of their PANs. NRIs with inoperative PANs are requested to inform their respective JAOs and provide supporting documents to update their residential status in the PAN database.
