Ishrat Jahan case: Tainted Gujarat cops forced to quit by Supreme Court

Gujarat police officers NK Amin and Tarun Barot, who have been accused in Ishrat Jahan encounter case resigned on Thursday.

Ishrat Jahan

Amin, who retired in August last year as Superintendent of Police (SP), was re-appointed as SP of Mahisagar district of Gujarat on contractual basis for one year.

Barot has been re-inducted in October last year as Deputy Superintendent of Police with Western Railways at Vadodara for one year after his retirement.

A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud considered the statement of the lawyer appearing for the two police officers and asked them to "step down" from their posts during the day itself.

Rahul Sharma, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, had questioned the Gujarat government for re-appointing the officers.

His petition alleged that Amin has faced trial in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan encounter killings and Barot was accused in the Sadiq Jaman and Ishrat Jahan killings.
