Iqra Hasan Slams Assam Beef Ban, Warns Of Threat To Freedom And Democracy

Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan expressed strong opposition to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's decision to enforce a complete ban on beef consumption in public places, hotels, and restaurants.

Speaking during the Winter Session of Parliament, Hasan called the move a violation of the "right to freedom" and warned against government interference in personal choices, stating it could lead the nation towards dictatorship, as reported by Hindustan Times.

"It is the beauty of our country that people follow diverse cultures and religions. Such decisions are against the Constitution," said Hasan, the Lok Sabha MP from Kairana, Uttar Pradesh, as quoted by ANI.

Assam CM's Stance on Beef Ban

On Wednesday, Sarma announced the government's decision to expand the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021. The law, initially aimed at prohibiting cattle slaughter, now includes a ban on beef consumption in all public spaces, including restaurants and hotels. "From today, we have decided that beef will not be served in any public function or public place across the state," Sarma stated, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Earlier, restrictions were limited to areas near temples. However, the CM justified the broader ban as part of the government's commitment to strengthening the Act.

Opposition Unites Against the Ban

Iqra Hasan was not alone in her criticism. Opposition leaders across party lines condemned the move, accusing the Assam government of fueling communal tensions.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi remarked that the Assam CM's attempts to polarize voters had backfired during the Jharkhand elections. "He should remember that as BJP's in-charge for Jharkhand, he lost the election after making it about Hindus versus Muslims," she said, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi echoed similar sentiments, alleging that Sarma was deflecting from his political failures. "Under Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership, BJP faced a shameful defeat in Jharkhand. Now, he's trying to distract from his loss with this divisive policy. The people of Assam will reject this politics of hatred just like Jharkhand did," Gogoi asserted.

Growing Concerns Over Constitutional Freedoms

Hasan's comments reflect broader apprehensions among opposition leaders about the government's encroachment on personal liberties. With the ban sparking debates on religious and cultural rights, critics argue that such policies risk undermining the pluralistic fabric of the country, as per media reports.

As the beef ban continues to stir controversy, the Assam government stands firm on its decision, leaving room for a larger political showdown in the months to come.
