Internal Rift in JDU: KC Tyagi Resigns Following Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Victory

Former MP and Senior politician KC Tyagi resigned from the Janata Dal United (JDU) on March 17, citing dissatisfaction over party chief Nitish Kumar securing a Rajya Sabha seat. Tyagi's exit comes just a day after Kumar's victory, signaling deep internal differences within the party.

In a letter, Tyagi stated that he had not renewed his party membership following the latest membership drive and indicated that his principles and focus on farmers, marginalized communities, and the downtrodden would remain unchanged. Sources say Tyagi was unhappy with what he saw as Nitish Kumar prioritising his political ambitions over the party's broader goals, prompting his resignation.

Next Steps and Political Plans

Tyagi revealed that a meeting of political associates, supporters, and activists will be held on March 22 at Mavlankar Hall in Delhi, where his future political strategy will be discussed. Reports suggest he may now turn his focus toward Uttar Pradesh politics, potentially joining another party or forging an independent path.

Reflecting on his career, Tyagi recalled his decades-long association with JDU, which was formed in 2003 following the merger of the Samata Party and Janata Dal under George Fernandes. He worked closely with leaders like Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kumar, holding key roles including general secretary, spokesperson, and political advisor. Despite his departure, he stated that personal respect for Nitish Kumar remains intact.

Hailing from Ghaziabad, Tyagi has been active in politics since the 1970s, elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989 and later serving in the Rajya Sabha. His exit from JDU, especially at this moment, is being closely watched for its potential impact on party dynamics in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
