Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant Addresses Indira Gandhi's Insult to Constitution in 1971-72
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant addressed concerns about alleged attempts to alter the Constitution under BJP governance. Speaking at a tribal convention in Farmagudi, North Goa, he dismissed these claims as false propaganda. He referenced the Emergency period, suggesting that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had disrespected the Constitution during 1971-72.

Sawant assured that the BJP-led government at the Centre has no plans to amend the Constitution, which was crafted under Babasaheb Ambedkar's leadership. "I don't want to make any political statement here but we would like to assure that the rights enshrined in the Constitution would not be changed till the moon and the sun exist," he stated. He emphasised that the BJP considers the Constitution supreme and will protect all rights granted to various communities.
Political Reservation in Goa
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Goa government has responded to demands for political reservation in the coastal state. A decision on this matter was made by the state Cabinet. Sawant acknowledged criticism from some quarters who view this decision as merely symbolic. However, he pledged to ensure its implementation.
Sawant revealed plans for a resolution on political reservation to be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament. He expressed his commitment to securing political reservation by 2027. This move aims to address longstanding demands and provide representation for underrepresented groups in Goa.
During his speech, Sawant reiterated that the BJP respects and upholds the Constitution. He assured that all constitutional rights would remain intact. His comments aimed to dispel fears and reassure citizens about the government's intentions regarding constitutional amendments.
The Chief Minister's remarks come amid ongoing debates about constitutional changes in India. By referencing historical events, Sawant sought to highlight past instances where he believes the Constitution was undermined. His statements were intended to contrast with current government policies.
Sawant's commitment to political reservation reflects efforts to address local concerns and enhance representation in Goa. The proposed resolution in Parliament signifies a step towards fulfilling promises made by his administration. As discussions continue, Sawant's assurances aim to build trust among constituents.
