India and the US Collaborate on Defense to Mitigate China’s Indo-Pacific Influence
India and the United States are working closely to address the challenges posed by China, which could become a significant concern for both nations in the future.
A recent report highlights India's role as America's primary partner in defense training globally. This partnership is evident in the numerous military exercises conducted worldwide, showcasing their commitment to countering China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Their goal is to ensure this area remains free, open, and secure, preventing Beijing from intimidating other countries.

The deepening defense ties between India and the US are a response to China's aggressive stance in the Indo-Pacific. General Charles A. Flynn, the US Army Pacific commander, emphasized the importance of building partnerships, enhancing interoperability, and engaging in military exercises across this vast region. India's strategic position as a leading security provider in the Indian Ocean Region underscores its critical role in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific. In just one month, American forces have joined India in four significant military exercises, also involving Thailand, South Korea, and Japan.
The Indo-Pacific region has become a central focus of global geopolitics, home to major powers like China and India. It includes the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean, stretching from Africa's eastern coast to the western Pacific. Over 40 countries fall within this area, contributing significantly to the world's population, GDP, trade, and energy transportation. For India, this region is vital as it handles 90% of its trade and receives 80% of its energy imports.

One notable event highlighting this partnership is the Tiger Triumph-24 exercise. This three-week military drill started on March 18 in the Bay of Bengal. It involves extensive participation from both nations' armed forces, including navy warships, army troops, air force helicopters, and medical teams. The exercise aims to strengthen military cooperation between India and the US. Additionally, other exercises like Cobra Gold with Thailand and Freedom Shield with South Korea have been conducted, showcasing a broad commitment to regional security.

India has become the most frequent partner for US military exercises globally. This includes various joint exercises like 'Yudh Abhyas', 'Vajra Prahar', and 'Cope India', among others. These drills cover a wide range of operations from counter-terrorism to large-scale naval maneuvers like the Malabar Exercise and the Rim of the Pacific exercise. Such activities highlight the growing strategic partnership aimed at ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Last month, India hosted MILAN 2024, a significant naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal that saw participation from over 50 countries. The US Navy's involvement with the USS Halsey underscores the depth of Indo-US naval cooperation. Besides MILAN, both nations participate in various other exercises like Cutlass Express and Sea Dragon, reflecting their commitment to maintaining regional security against potential threats from China. This collaboration has drawn criticism from Chinese media but continues to strengthen as both countries aim for a secure Indo-Pacific region.
