Indias Strong Relationship with Russia: A 60-Year Engagement
Indias External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasizes the importance of Indias 60-year relationship with Russia, stating that it has saved India many times and should not be seen as a handicap.
India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently addressed a technology conclave in New Delhi, where he emphasized India's long-standing relationship with Russia and the significance of maintaining strong ties. He highlighted that India's engagement with Russia spans over six decades and should not be viewed as a handicap, as it has provided numerous benefits to the country.
Addressing Western Concerns
Against the backdrop of increasing disquiet among Western powers over India's close ties with Russia, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, Jaishankar asserted that India's relationship with Russia has evolved over a long period and serves the country's interests. He stated that this relationship has been mutually beneficial and has helped India in various ways.
Historical Context of India-Russia Ties
Jaishankar highlighted the historical aspects of India's engagement with Russia, emphasizing the geographical and political factors that have shaped their relationship. He explained that given their proximity as neighbors, it makes sense for India and Russia to maintain strong relations, in line with the principle of considering one's neighbor's neighbor in politics.
India's Economic Progression
The External Affairs Minister also spoke about India's economic progression and the need to catch up in many areas. He acknowledged that while India's era of reform began three decades ago, it was not primarily focused on technology. As a result, India is now playing catch-up in terms of developing comprehensive national power, compared to other competitive powers.
Modi Government's Assertive Approach
Jaishankar briefly mentioned the Modi government's assertive approach in taking India forward on its overall growth path. He highlighted the efforts in building and delivering digital public infrastructure, which the Prime Minister refers to as "democratizing technology." The widespread use and familiarity with technology among the average person in India were also highlighted, as evidenced by the massive volume of UPI transactions.
India's strong relationship with Russia is not a recent development but rather the result of a long and mutually beneficial partnership. Despite concerns raised by Western powers, India maintains that this relationship serves its national interests. As India continues to progress economically and embrace technology, it is leveraging its partnership with Russia to further its growth and development.
