India Post SMS Scam Alert; Government Warns
This prompted a response from the PIB (Press Information Bureau), which issued a warning on X (formerly Twitter), advising users to beware of this deceptive message. The PIB emphasized that clicking on the link provided in the SMS could potentially lead to the theft of users' private information. It clarified that India Post does not send such messages requesting address updates for package delivery, urging vigilance and caution among recipients.
Taking to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, PIB alerted and wrote, "Have you also received an SMS from @IndiaPostOffice stating that your package has arrived at the warehouse, further asking you to update your address details within 48 hours to avoid the package being returned #PIBFactCheck Beware! This message is #fake."
What's behind the India Post SMS scam?
Users have been receiving deceptive messages purportedly from India Post, stating, "Your package has arrived at the warehouse and we attempted delivery twice but were unable to due to incomplete address information. Please update your address within 48 hours to avoid the package being returned. Click on the link [indisposegvs.top/IN] to update your address. After the update is complete, the package will be re-delivered within 24 hours."
These messages are part of a scam designed to trick recipients into clicking on malicious links. Clicking on such links can compromise your device by allowing hackers to install viruses or malicious software. This gives them unauthorized access to sensitive data stored on your device, which can be misused for various fraudulent activities.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning, advising users not to click on any links in such messages. They clarified that India Post never sends messages asking recipients to update their addresses through SMS or email.
If you receive any suspicious messages claiming to be from India Post or any other organization, it is crucial to refrain from clicking on any links provided. Instead, report such messages to the cyber police or visit cybercrime.gov.in for further assistance in handling potential cyber threats and protecting your personal information. Taking these precautions can help safeguard against falling victim to phishing scams and other online frauds.
