India's Inclusion in UN Security Council Advocated by Lord Rami Ranger for Global Stability
India's inclusion in the UN Security Council is crucial for global stability, according to Lord Rami Ranger, a member of the House of Lords. During an event at the India International Centre, he emphasised that peace is essential for progress. Conflicts in one region affect the entire world, he noted, highlighting the interconnectedness of global issues.

The panel discussion focused on India's neighbourhood and its relations with the US. Lord Ranger pointed out that India offers a vast market growing at 6-7% annually. He compared a free trade agreement with India to agreements with ten countries due to its size and potential. He also praised India's secular and democratic values, which make it a reliable business partner compared to China.
India-China Border Developments
Former Indian ambassador Jayant Prasad described recent developments in the India-China border dispute as positive but stressed the need for restoring the status quo ante. He mentioned that resolving the border issue requires a deeper approach and cannot be achieved in one step. The Line of Actual Control (LAC) needs clarification, as perceptions differ between India and China.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently endorsed an agreement on patrolling and disengagement along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. This agreement aims to normalise ties affected by a military clash in 2020. Modi emphasised handling differences properly to maintain peace in border areas during their meeting at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.
India's Role in Global Peace
Lord Ranger highlighted India's role as a catalyst for peace and stability due to its status as the largest democracy and most populous country. He stated that India's rightful place in the UN Security Council would enhance global stability. The Indian diaspora also plays a significant role worldwide, contributing to India's positive image.
Prasad, who has served as India's envoy to various countries, reiterated the importance of defining the LAC clearly. This clarity would help estimate patrol points accurately and ultimately resolve the border issue permanently. Gradual normalisation of ties can follow once these steps are taken.
The ongoing dialogue between India and China signals attempts to revive bilateral mechanisms and improve relations. Both countries aim to address disputes without disturbing peace, focusing on mutual trust and respect as foundational principles.
