India, France Officials Plan Future of New National Museum in Delhi
India and France have embarked on a significant cultural collaboration to establish the new National Museum in Delhi, marking a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries. This partnership was highlighted recently when a top French official, along with a team of experts, engaged in discussions to further this ambitious project, as confirmed by the French Embassy in India.

The forthcoming Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum, poised to be the world's largest museum, aims to encapsulate India's rich history spanning over 5,000 years through eight thematic segments. The museum is set to occupy the iconic North Block and South Block in New Delhi, covering an impressive area of 1.17 lakh sqm with 950 rooms across a basement and three storeys.
According to a post shared by the French Embassy on X, this collaboration was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Aurélien Lechevallier, Director General for Global Affairs and Cultural and Economic Diplomacy, along with his team, visited the museum site to discuss the forthcoming steps in this joint venture. The visit underscores the commitment of both nations to bring this monumental project to fruition.
The meeting also saw participation from Union Cultural Secretary Govind Mohan among other Indian officials, highlighting the project's significance at the highest levels of government. This initiative follows a letter of intent signed on 28 January 2020, focusing on museum and heritage cooperation between India and France. The two countries expressed their intent to explore possibilities for France to contribute as a 'knowledge partner' in creating this new landmark in Delhi.
This collaboration was further cemented during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's working visit to Paris on May 4, 2022, hosted by President Macron. The partnership not only signifies a strong cultural bond between India and France but also promises to create a global landmark that narrates the story of India through its extensive history and heritage.
The establishment of the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum underlines the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting international cooperation in celebrating global histories. As this project progresses, it stands as a testament to the enduring friendship and mutual respect between India and France, setting a precedent for future cultural collaborations across the globe.
