India And Pakistan Extend Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Agreement
India and Pakistan have agreed to extend the Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Agreement for another five years. This agreement, initially signed on 24 October 2019, allows Indian pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Narowal, Pakistan. The corridor facilitates travel without a visa, enabling pilgrims to reach the holy site with just their passports.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that this extension ensures uninterrupted access for Indian pilgrims. However, India has urged Pakistan to remove the USD 20 service charge per pilgrim per visit. This request follows ongoing appeals from pilgrims who wish to visit without incurring additional fees.

Historical Significance of the Corridor
Sri Guru Nanak Dev, Sikhism's founder, spent over 18 years at Gurdwara Kartarpur on the Ravi River's banks. The corridor's establishment in 2019 was a significant diplomatic achievement despite strained India-Pakistan relations. It allows Sikh pilgrims to visit this sacred site in Pakistan.
The agreement also permits persons of Indian origin with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card to use the corridor. Initially, both nations agreed on visa-free travel for Indian pilgrims using this route. The arrangement includes provisions for up to 5,000 daily visitors, with more allowed during special events if facilities expand.
Operational Details and Recent Developments
The corridor operates year-round and seven days a week. Pilgrims can travel individually or in groups, except for children and elderly individuals who may have different arrangements. This development comes shortly after EAM S Jaishankar's visit to Islamabad for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.
This diplomatic progress highlights ongoing efforts to maintain peaceful religious exchanges between India and Pakistan. The extension of the agreement reflects both countries' commitment to facilitating spiritual journeys for Sikh devotees while addressing logistical challenges.
The Kartarpur Corridor remains a symbol of cooperation amidst complex bilateral ties. Its continued operation is crucial for fostering goodwill and understanding between the two nations through shared cultural and religious heritage.
