Mandatory Gold Hallmarking in India

Since June 2021, hallmarking has been mandatory for all gold jewellery and artefacts in India. A hallmarked gold item typically displays three important marks:

BIS logo

Purity mark (e.g., 22K916 indicating 91.6% purity)

Unique Hallmark Identification (HUID) code, a six-digit alphanumeric ID for online verification.

Using the BIS Care App to Verify Gold

To verify your gold via the BIS Care app:

• Download the app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
• Register using your mobile number.
• On the home screen, select 'Verify HUID'.
• Enter the six-digit HUID engraved on your jewellery.
• The app will display details such as:
• Jeweller's name and registration
• Hallmarking centre name
• Item type and purity

If these details match your jewellery and invoice, the hallmark is genuine. For invalid HUIDs or discrepancies, use the app's 'Complaints' section to report issues directly to BIS.

Alternative Verification Methods

If you prefer not to use the app, BIS's official website offers an HUID verification service. Enter the same six-digit code to access registration and purity information. Any mismatches or incomplete data can be reported to BIS.

Important Note:

Online verification is only possible if your jewellery has a readable HUID.

Items purchased before June 2021 may not have HUID codes. In such cases, verification can be done at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC).
