How India's Chakshu Portal Aims To Thwart Cyber Fraud
Today at the click of a mouse, we can transfer large amounts of money. With an imprint of our thumb, we can make payments via digital payment apps. But this convenience comes with a huge risk. The net has also become a hunting ground for cybercriminals. Cyber fraud, a global scourge, has reached alarming proportions, with India being no exception. According to a 2021 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report, cyber fraud losses in the country amounted to a whopping ₹1.38 trillion ($18.3 billion) in just one financial year.
Now the Indian government has decided to tackle the menace systematically. The Chakshu Portal, a revolutionary initiative has been launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Chakshu on the Sanchar Saathi portal (https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) will help to report suspected fraudulent communications.

THE ALLURE AND THE PERIL: WHY WE FALL PREY
Cyber fraudsters employ various means to deceive their victims. From phishing emails and genuine-looking texts that mimic trusted sources to trap their victims. The problem for law agencies is that these criminals constantly innovate their methods. These frauds use various means from phone calls to WhatsApp messages to SMS to dupe people of their hard-earned money. For instance, the text may appear from a genuine bank or an insurance agency, but instead, it's a trap by these cyber criminals to dupe people.
CHAKSHU: YOUR EYES AND EARS IN THE DIGITAL REALM
Chakshu, meaning "eye" in Hindi, aptly signifies its purpose - to be the public's smart eye to navigate the world of cyber fraud. This user-friendly portal empowers citizens to report any suspicious communication they encounter. Whether it's a phishing attempt mimicking your bank, a fake call posing as a customer service representative, or a text with a malicious link, Chakshu provides a platform to report it all.
The reported information is then analysed by the authorities. This empowers the dedicated team of experts to identify emerging trends in cyber fraud tactics, allowing them to proactively issue warnings and educate the public. It's a crucial shift from reactive measures to a pre-emptive approach, nipping cybercrime in the bud before it can inflict widespread damage.
THE POWER OF A COLLECTIVE WATCH
Chakshu's significance goes beyond just reporting. It is designed to work as a collective vigilance. By encouraging public participation, the portal creates a vast network of eyes and ears constantly on the lookout for suspicious activity. This collective vigilance empowers citizens to become active participants in their cybersecurity. The complaints would be tracked to prepare a pattern - a red flag instantly pops up for the authorities, allowing them to take swift action and potentially prevent countless others from falling victim. So what should one do, if they are already duped? The government says that a victim of cyber-crime or financial fraud can report at the cyber-crime helpline number 1930 or the website https://www.cybercrime.gov.in
The Chakshu portal, along with its companion platform, the DIP (Digital Intelligence Platform), aims to spearhead India's fight against cyber fraud. By fostering collaboration between law enforcement, financial institutions, and the public, Chakshu empowers citizens to become active guardians of the digital realm. But it is still in its early days, and it would be interesting to see if the new initiative lives up to its purpose and becomes a potent tool to combat cybercrime.
