Haryana Results 2024: INLD's Abhay Chautala Faces Humiliating Defeat By A Margin Of 14,000 Votes
Abhay Singh Chautala, a prominent figure in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), has faced a significant defeat in the Ellenabad assembly constituency of Haryana. In a three-way contest, Congress' Bharat Singh Beniwal emerged victorious, surpassing Chautala by over 14,861 votes, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI). This loss marks a major setback for Chautala and his party.
Chautala's political journey in Ellenabad has been marked by fluctuating fortunes. He first secured the seat in the 2010 Haryana bypolls with a vote share of 50.75% and 64,813 votes. However, his vote share decreased over subsequent elections. In 2014, he won with 46.65% of the votes, amounting to 69,162 votes. By 2019, both his vote share and total votes had declined further.

Challengers in Ellenabad
Bharat Singh Beniwal and BJP's Amir Chand Talwara have been persistent challengers to Chautala's hold on Ellenabad. Both contested unsuccessfully for the seat back in 2009 when Om Prakash Chautala was victorious. Despite their efforts, they have struggled to break Chautala's strong voter base until now.
Chautala's recent challenges stem from shifting voter dynamics and dissatisfaction with local governance issues such as unemployment and farmer distress. His alliances with parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and support from Gopal Kanda's Haryana Lokhit Party haven't been enough to secure victory this time around.
Historical Context
The Ellenabad constituency has long been a stronghold for the Chautala family. Abhay Singh Chautala managed to retain control through various elections despite facing tough competition. His ability to navigate three-way contests has been attributed to his solid voter base among farmers.
In 2021, after resigning due to disagreements with the Centre over farmers' demands, Chautala regained his seat in a bypoll with over 65,000 votes and a vote share of 43.69%. However, this recent election has proven more challenging due to changing political landscapes.
Impact on INLD
This loss is not just personal but also impacts the INLD significantly. The party has relied heavily on Chautala's influence in Ellenabad as part of its broader strategy in Haryana politics. With Congress gaining ground through Beniwal's win, INLD faces an uncertain future in this key region.
BJP's Amir Chand Talwara also faced defeat in this election by a margin of 64,263 votes. The three-party contest highlighted shifting allegiances among voters who are increasingly looking for alternatives beyond traditional powerhouses like INLD and BJP.
The outcome underscores growing voter dissatisfaction with existing leadership amid pressing local issues like inflation and governance challenges. As political dynamics continue evolving rapidly across Haryana constituencies such as Ellenabad remain pivotal battlegrounds shaping future electoral strategies for all major parties involved.
