Haryana Results: Bhupinder Singh Hooda Confident Of Congress' Victory, Body Language Tells A Different Story

In the midst of fluctuating election trends, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a senior Congress leader and former chief minister, expressed confidence that his party would form the government in Haryana. Despite the BJP leading in 48 seats at around 10:15 am, Hooda remained steadfast in his belief that Congress would secure a majority. His demeanor, however, seemed less optimistic as he addressed reporters.

The atmosphere at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi shifted dramatically over a few hours. Initially buoyant due to exit polls predicting a clear victory for Congress, celebrations began even before vote counting commenced on Tuesday morning. However, as the BJP gained momentum and crossed the halfway mark in leads, the celebratory mood became subdued.

Congress's Confidence Amidst Close Contests

Hooda emphasized that Congress would not require support from any other party to establish a government. When pressed repeatedly on this point, he appeared frustrated but reiterated his stance. He acknowledged tight races in certain constituencies but maintained that these would not prevent Congress from taking power in Haryana.

When questioned about potential candidates for chief minister amidst competition between him and Kumari Selja, Hooda stated that the decision would be made by the party. He credited the anticipated "victory" to the people of Haryana and key figures like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.

Potential Setback for Congress

If current trends persist, losing Haryana could be a significant blow for Congress. The party had been optimistic about a comeback after securing 99 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP was perceived to be struggling with anti-incumbency issues and dissatisfaction among farmers, athletes, and military aspirants.

Experts have suggested that Congress may have "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory." This phrase reflects their view that despite initial promising signs, Congress might ultimately fall short of forming the government due to shifting voter sentiments.

The situation remains dynamic as vote counting continues. Both parties are closely monitoring developments with hopes pinned on final results aligning with their expectations. The outcome will determine whether Congress can indeed claim governance or if BJP retains its hold on Haryana.
