Justice K V Vishwanathan Emphasises Importance of Locating Law for Lawyers
Supreme Court judge K V Vishwanathan highlighted the importance of knowing where to find legal information rather than just knowing the law itself. He spoke at the launch of the 19th edition of the Specific Relief Act, authored by Sudipto Sarkar and Sidharth Sethi. The book, published by LexisNexis, is a detailed commentary on the Specific Relief Act of 1963, updated with the 2018 amendments.

Justice Vishwanathan emphasised that a lawyer's ability to locate relevant laws is crucial and relies on having access to comprehensive legal resources. He praised the new edition of Sarkar's book for its timely release following the 2018 amendments. "In that sense, the book is timely, and it is bound to prove to be an invaluable asset to the members of the legal fraternity, to students in the judicial academies and almost concerned with law in any manner whatsoever," he said.
Legal Texts as Knowledge Pillars
Justice Surya Kant, serving as the chief guest, described the book as a solution manual for complex civil law statutes. He noted that while the 1963 act focused on remedies, the 2018 amendment significantly altered this focus. He stated, "As India stands at the dream of exponential economic growth, this amendment is not just about legal reform, it is about creating the foundation for our country's future, both economically and legally."
The amendment aims to provide security for both domestic and international investors. Justice Kant remarked that celebrating this edition honours not just a book but also its role in shaping society. "Legal texts like this one serve as pillars of knowledge, guiding us through the complexities of our legal system," he concluded.
Enhancing Legal Understanding
Senior Advocate Sarkar expressed that his book will deepen readers' understanding of law and equip them with analytical tools for practical application. The book's comprehensive coverage makes it an essential resource for legal practitioners and students alike.
The 19th edition of Sarkar's Specific Relief Act is expected to be a valuable asset for those involved in legal studies or practice. It offers insights into case law and discusses legal positions across different jurisdictions, making it a significant contribution to legal literature.
This new edition arrives at a crucial time when India's economic landscape is rapidly evolving. By providing clarity on amended sections, it supports both legal reform and economic growth initiatives.
