Goa’s New Year Surprises: Quiet Streets, Sky-High Prices, And Mixed Reactions!
Goa, traditionally known for its bustling tourist season around Christmas and New Year, is experiencing a shift this year. While some visitors expected the usually crowded beaches and lively streets, others are surprised by the quieter atmosphere and the steep rise in prices during the holiday season.
A "Deserted" Goa?

A recent video shared by a FinTech developer on X (formerly Twitter) showed the "deserted" streets of Goa, sparking mixed reactions from viewers. Many agreed that the usual influx of tourists was notably absent. "Can't believe this is Goa around New Year," one user commented, while another, Ravisutanjani, speculated, "People are heading to Southeast Asia for better value for money. Indian tourism, in a nutshell, disappointed."
However, others quickly refuted these claims, asserting that Goa is still packed with visitors despite the quieter streets. Many attributed the drop in crowds to the soaring prices of hotels, taxis, and rental services during the peak season, which might have deterred budget-conscious tourists.
Skyrocketing Prices: A Major Turnoff?
X user Nishant Kumar gave a breakdown of the price hikes that have taken many by surprise. "Taxi from the airport to Candolim: 1300-1400 normally, now 2500-3000. Scooter rentals: 450-500 normally, now 1200. AirBnB rentals: 3500 normally, now 6000," he wrote. Despite the price inflation, Kumar argued that Goa is still busy with tourists, though many are unhappy with the increased costs. He warned that such inflated prices could hurt Goa's tourism industry in the long run.
Goa's Tourism Minister Responds
In response to the growing concerns, Goa's Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, reassured the public that the tourist season is thriving, particularly among high-end travellers. He confirmed that four-star and five-star hotels across the state are reporting near-full occupancy. "The season has been exceptional, with high-end hotels almost at full capacity, showing that Goa remains a prime destination for affluent travellers from both existing and emerging markets," Khaunte told PTI.
Conclusion: Is Goa Losing Its Appeal?
While some visitors are disappointed by the quieter atmosphere and skyrocketing prices, others argue that Goa's allure remains strong, albeit with a shift toward attracting wealthier tourists. The big question is whether these rising costs will continue to shape the state's tourism landscape. Will Goa maintain its popularity in the face of these price hikes, or will it lose its charm to more affordable destinations? Only time will tell.
