GHMC Council Approves Annual Budget of Rs 8,440 Crore for 2025-26 Amid Protests
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sanctioned a budget of Rs 8,440 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. This decision was made during a council meeting led by Mayor Vijaya Lakshmi R Gadwal. The session faced disruptions as BRS corporators protested, demanding discussions on their concerns and accusing the government of neglecting Hyderabad's development.

Despite efforts to restore order, the BRS corporators continued their protest, leading the Mayor to instruct marshals to remove them from the premises. These members were subsequently taken to various police stations. BRS Working President K T Rama Rao expressed his disapproval on social media platform X, criticising the police action against party members who questioned the Congress government's handling of city affairs.
Protests and Allegations
During the meeting, BJP Lok Sabha member Eatala Rajender, present as an ex-officio member, voiced concerns about contractors' reluctance to undertake civic projects due to unpaid dues. He highlighted issues such as deteriorating roads and water bodies, urging for funds to complete essential civic tasks. These allegations added to the tension in the meeting.
Mayor Vijaya Lakshmi R Gadwal acknowledged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for providing funds for welfare and development initiatives in Hyderabad. She emphasised the need for cooperation between corporators and officials to ensure the city's progress. Her remarks aimed to foster unity amid the ongoing disputes.
Tribute and Future Plans
The council also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who recently passed away. This moment of respect was observed amidst the heated discussions and protests that marked the meeting. The homage served as a reminder of Singh's contributions to India.
The approved budget aims to address various civic needs in Hyderabad, despite the controversies surrounding its approval. The focus remains on improving infrastructure and public services in the city. The GHMC's plans include addressing road conditions and enhancing water management systems.
As Hyderabad moves forward with its development agenda, cooperation among political parties and stakeholders is crucial. The challenges highlighted during the meeting underscore the importance of effective governance and accountability in achieving sustainable urban growth.
