Uncertainty Looms Over Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi's Candidature in Key Constituencies
With the nomination deadline for the Lok Sabha seats in Amethi and Rae Bareli fast approaching, speculation continues to swirl around whether prominent Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will represent these constituencies. Known as the Gandhi-Nehru family's bastions for decades, the decision regarding their candidature remains pending, with only two days left until the nomination process concludes.

Sources close to the matter suggest that Rahul Gandhi is considering contesting from Rae Bareli, a seat traditionally held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, from 2004 to 2024. However, a definitive decision is still awaited from the Congress's first family. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's interest in the Rae Bareli seat has also been noted, though Rahul Gandhi reportedly harbors reservations about this move, aiming to counteract criticisms of dynasty politics leveled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A meeting was convened on Wednesday to deliberate on the candidates for these crucial seats, but it concluded without any resolution. K L Sharma, a confidant of the Gandhis, expressed that there is a strong anticipation among people for the family to contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli. He assured that a decision would be made "very soon," emphasizing the looming deadline of May 3 for filing nominations.
In response to queries about the delay in announcing candidates for these seats, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reassured that there is no cause for concern. He revealed that the party's central election committee (CEC) has granted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge the authority to finalize the candidates. Ramesh expects an announcement within the next 24-30 hours, dismissing any circulated information as unfounded until then.
The uncertainty has not deterred Congress workers in Amethi from expressing their loyalty; they recently staged a sit-in demanding that a Gandhi family member be nominated. Rahul Gandhi has represented Amethi since 2004 but lost the seat to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. He currently serves as MP for Wayanad in Kerala, having also contested there in the last general elections.
Rahul Gandhi has previously stated his commitment to abide by any decision his party makes regarding his candidacy. The elections for Amethi and Rae Bareli are scheduled for May 20, during the fifth phase of India's seven-phase general elections. The Congress has entered into an alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats together. The electoral process commenced on April 19, with vote counting set for June 4.
