From Coke To Condoms: Know What India Ordered Most On New Year's Eve
As the clock struck midnight on December 31, 2024, India witnessed a unique celebration of the convenience economy, with instant delivery services fulfilling an eclectic mix of orders that showcased the diverse ways people chose to ring in the New Year. The country's quick commerce platforms, including giants like Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit, and BigBasket, went above and beyond to cater to the whims and fancies of their customers, delivering everything from party essentials to the more unconventional requests that added a hint of amusement to the festivities.
This New Year's Eve was no exception, with companies live-updating the nation on the quirky and sometimes unexpected items people ordered to enhance their celebrations.

Among the revelry, party favorites like chips, coke, and namkeen emerged as the evening's champions, with Blinkit co-founder Albinder Dhindsa revealing on X (formerly Twitter) some impressive numbers. By 8 pm, his team had successfully delivered 230,000 packets of aloo bhujiya and 6,834 packets of ice cubes. The demand for condoms also saw a surprising breakdown, with chocolate-flavored options leading sales at 39%, followed by strawberry at 31%, and bubblegum at 19%, after a curious user inquired about the specifics.
Unexpected Bestsellers and Social Media Insights
Dhindsa expressed his astonishment over the surge in grape orders on the platform, questioning, "What's with the sudden craze for grapes today??" His query was met with enlightenment from social media users, who attributed the phenomenon to an age-old tradition popularized by Sofia Vergara's character, Gloria, in "Modern Family." According to this tradition, eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve is believed to bring good luck, explaining the unexpected spike in orders.
Swiggy Instamart also shared intriguing data, reporting a staggering 853 chip orders per minute at 7:30 pm and a peak in ice deliveries at 7:41 pm, totaling 119 kgs in just one minute. Among the more unusual requests, one customer's order of blindfolds and handcuffs highlighted the varied and sometimes risqué nature of New Year's Eve celebrations. Similarly, BigBasket witnessed a significant surge in sales for non-alcoholic beverages and party supplies, with non-alcoholic drinks sales jumping by 552%, and disposable cups and plates by 325%. The demand for soda and mocktails also saw a 200% increase, underscoring the vibrancy and diversity of the festivities.
The quick commerce platforms' ability to meet the eclectic demands of their customers on such a grand scale underscores a significant shift in consumer behavior and the evolving landscape of retail in India. As these companies continue to extend their reach beyond major cities, they not only offer convenience but also become an integral part of the country's celebratory traditions, catering to the whimsical and the practical alike.
