Five-Time Congress MLA Mateen Ahmad Joins Aam Aadmi Party Ahead Of Delhi Assembly Elections 2025

Popular Congress leader and five-time MLA from Seelampur constituency, Mateen Ahmad on Sunday joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Mteen Ahmad was officially welcomed to the party by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal during a public rally. Mateen Ahmad has been represented the Seelampur Assembly constituency from 1993 to 2013.

Mateen Ahmad's move follows closely on the heels of his son and daughter-in-law joining AAP. Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed and his wife, Shagufta Chaudhary, who is also a councillor, became part of the party on October 29. This shift is particularly concerning for Delhi Congress as assembly elections are approaching in February next year.

Political Shifts in Delhi

While AAP gained a prominent member, it faced its own setback when Harsharan Singh Balli left the party. Balli, along with his son Gurmeet Singh, rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He had previously served as a four-time BJP MLA from Harinagar and was a minister under Madan Lal Khurana's government before joining AAP.

The return of Harsharan Singh Balli to BJP was marked by an event attended by Virendra Sachdeva, president of BJP's Delhi unit. Former colleagues Subhash Arya and Subhash Sachdeva were also present during this occasion.

Reactions and Implications

Arvind Kejriwal expressed his thoughts on Mateen Ahmad's joining through X, stating: "Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed ji has been serving the people by living in the Yamuna-paar area." The inclusion of such experienced leaders could bolster AAP's position ahead of upcoming elections.

This political reshuffling highlights the dynamic nature of Delhi's political landscape. With key figures switching parties, both AAP and BJP are strategising for future electoral success. The developments underscore the importance of alliances and leadership in shaping voter sentiment.

The recent changes reflect broader trends in Indian politics where party loyalty can be fluid. As elections approach, parties are keenly aware that influential leaders can sway public opinion and impact electoral outcomes significantly.
