Rohith Vemula's Family Challenges Telangana Police's Suicide Case Closure
The family of Rohith Vemula, a student from the University of Hyderabad who died by suicide in 2016, has announced plans to legally challenge the Telangana Police's closure report on his case. The police had concluded that Vemula was not a Dalit and suggested his suicide was driven by fears over his caste identity being revealed. This closure has sparked controversy, leading to further scrutiny from Vemula's family and community leaders.

Raja Vemula, Rohith's brother, has voiced concerns over the police's assertion regarding Rohith's caste, emphasizing that the determination of their Scheduled Caste (SC) status rests with the district collector of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. This dispute over Rohith's caste identity is central to the family's challenge against the police report.
In response to the family's objections, Telangana Director General of Police Ravi Gupta announced late Friday that a petition would be filed for permission to conduct additional investigations. This decision comes amidst ongoing debates about caste and identity in India, highlighting the complex interplay between social status and legal recognition.
Raja Vemula also mentioned plans to meet with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to discuss the case further. The Telangana High Court has provided the option for the family to file a protest petition in a lower court, offering a legal avenue to contest the police's findings.
The closure report, which was officially submitted to the jurisdictional court on March 21 by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Madhapur, also absolved several accused individuals due to insufficient evidence. Among those cleared were the university's then vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile, former BJP MP Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP ex-MLC N Ramachander Rao, and some leaders from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
This legal challenge by Rohith Vemula's family underscores ongoing issues related to caste discrimination and identity verification within India's social and legal frameworks. As this case progresses, it will likely continue to attract attention from both national and international observers keen on understanding how India navigates these deeply entrenched societal challenges.
