Family Alleges Death in Police Custody During Lakhimpur Raid; Police Deny Claims and Refuse Action

Relatives of a man who died after a police raid are demanding action against officers, claiming he died in custody. The police refute this, stating he was a suspect under the Gangster Act and collapsed while escaping during the raid on Monday night. A video has emerged showing a deputy superintendent speaking to the grieving family.

Family Claims Death in Police Custody

In the video, Lakhimpur DSP PP Singh is heard saying, "There won't be any action against police officers over the incident. Neither SHO of Nighasan police station will be suspended nor SHO of Majhgain will be suspended. Nor will you get Rs 30 lakh as compensation." He further adds, "Do whatever you can. Keep the body for as many days," before leaving.

Family's Allegations and Demands

The deceased, Ramachandra, aged 35, was reportedly arrested on charges of making illicit liquor. His family claims he was held in custody despite pleading innocence, where his health worsened quickly. They allege he was taken to a health centre where he was declared dead. They demand an investigation and Rs 30 lakh compensation.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared the video on social media, criticising the ruling BJP as heartless. The family refused to perform last rites until their demands were addressed. They also accused the police of taking Ramachandra's body for post-mortem without consent.

Police's Standpoint and Investigation

Additional Superintendent of Police Pawan Gautam stated that Ramachandra was accused under the Gangster Act and collapsed while fleeing during the raid. He insisted that Ramachandra did not die in custody and mentioned that an investigation is ongoing. The post-mortem was conducted by a panel of doctors and recorded on video.

The post-mortem findings indicated death due to shock, with viscera preserved for further analysis. Following Ramachandra's death, his relatives and local villagers protested at the health centre, accusing the police of causing his death and demanding an investigation and compensation.

The situation remains tense as family members continue to seek justice for Ramachandra's death while authorities maintain their stance on the incident. The investigation is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding his demise.
