Election Commissioner Arun Goel Resigns, Leaving EC Panel with Two Vacancies
Election Commissioner Arun Goels resignation has left the Election Commission with only one Chief Election Commissioner, raising concerns ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The development has drawn attention to the recent changes in the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners.
In a significant development, Election Commissioner Arun Goel's resignation on Saturday has left two vacancies in the three-member Election Commission (EC) panel, sparking concerns about the timing of the appointments ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sudden Resignation Leaves EC with One Member
Goel's resignation comes just days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His tenure was originally set to continue until December 2027. With the retirement of Anup Pandey in February and Goel's resignation, the EC panel is now left with only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
Concerns Raised Over Appointment Process
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale took to social media to express his concerns about the situation. He highlighted that the Modi government has introduced a new law, "The Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners Appointment, Conditions of Service And Term of Office Act," which allows for the appointment of Election Commissioners with a majority vote of the Prime Minister and one Minister chosen by him.
New Law Empowers Prime Minister
The Act, passed by Parliament in December 2023, establishes a search committee chaired by the law minister and two other persons of high rank to prepare a panel of five individuals for consideration by the selection committee. The selection committee, headed by the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, and a Union minister, then makes recommendations to the President for the appointment of the CEC and other ECs.
Two Appointments Before 2024 Polls
Gokhale expressed deep concern over the fact that Prime Minister Modi will now appoint two out of the three Election Commissioners before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of the Election Commission, which is responsible for conducting free and fair elections.
Conclusion
The resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel and the subsequent concerns raised by political leaders underscore the need for a transparent and impartial appointment process for Election Commissioners. As the nation prepares for the upcoming general elections, it is crucial to ensure that the Election Commission remains an independent and credible institution, capable of conducting elections that uphold democratic principles and reflect the true will of the people.
