Eknath Shinde Visits Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam Before Crucial Maharashtra Assembly Elections
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has embarked on a visit to Guwahati, Assam. He plans to pray at the Kamakhya Devi Temple, a significant religious site. This visit is strategically timed before the crucial assembly elections set for November 20. According to an aide, Shinde will perform his prayers at the temple on Wednesday.

Shinde's visit to the temple is not his first. In June 2022, he visited the same shrine with 39 rebel MLAs from the undivided Shiv Sena. This was during a period of political upheaval when Shinde challenged Uddhav Thackeray's leadership. The revolt resulted in the fall of Thackeray's government and caused a split in the Shiv Sena.
Political Context and Historical Visits
On June 30, 2022, Shinde was sworn in as Maharashtra's Chief Minister with support from the BJP. Following his appointment, he returned to the Kamakhya Devi Temple in November 2022 to seek blessings. This marks Shinde's second visit to Guwahati as Chief Minister.
The upcoming assembly elections are critical for Shinde and his party. Scheduled for November 20, these elections will determine the composition of Maharashtra's new 288-member legislative assembly. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena is yet to announce its candidates for this election.
Coalition Dynamics and Election Stakes
Currently, Shinde leads a coalition government that includes the BJP and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), headed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. This coalition will face significant challenges in the forthcoming elections, making it a pivotal moment for Shinde's leadership.
Shinde's previous visit to Kamakhya Devi Temple was during a time of political turmoil. His actions then led to a major shift in Maharashtra's political landscape. As he prepares for another electoral battle, this visit holds symbolic importance.
The temple visit underscores Shinde's reliance on spiritual guidance during politically sensitive times. It also highlights his ongoing connection with key religious sites as part of his political journey.
As Maharashtra gears up for elections, all eyes are on Shinde and his strategies. His leadership will be tested as voters decide on their representatives for the next legislative term.
