DMK MP Stirs Controversy With ‘Gaumutra’ Statement, Later Defends It
DMK MP DNV Senthilkumar S sought to clarify his contentious 'Gaumutra states' remark in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, aiming to defuse the significant controversy it stirred. He emphasized that his statement wasn't meant to be controversial and highlighted its previous use in his parliamentary speeches.

"I made some statement inside the House. At the time Home Minister & BJP members were there at that time. I have used this before in my Parliament speeches. It was not a controversial statement. If it touches somebody I will try to avoid using it next time. I will use some other words to mention that where the BJP is strong in getting their votes," clarified the DMK MP in an interaction with news agency ANI.
Senthilkumar added, "So far, no one has approached me to express offense or hurt sentiments regarding my statements."
The uproar ensued following Senthilkumar's reference to the Hindi heartland states as 'Gaumutra' states, specifically in the context of the BJP's electoral triumph in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh during the recent assembly elections. He made the remark during a discussion on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
"The BJP's electoral prowess seems concentrated in the heartland Hindi states, often termed as 'Gaumutra' states," articulated Senthilkumar during the Lok Sabha session. He further commented on the BJP's strategy in handling states where they lack electoral success, hinting at the conversion of a state into a Union Territory.
Reacting to the controversy, Union Minister and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi condemned the statement, labeling it as a "disrespect of the 'Sanatani' tradition." She warned that the DMK would face repercussions for such remarks. Annapurna Devi, another BJP MP, criticized individuals making such statements, branding them as envious of PM Modi's global popularity and possessing a narrow mindset.
