Devender Singh Rana, Influential BJP MLA from Jammu and Kashmir, Dies at 59
Devender Singh Rana, a senior BJP leader and MLA from Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, passed away at 59. He died in a private hospital in Faridabad, Haryana. The cause of his death remains unknown. Rana was the younger brother of Union Minister Jitendra Singh. His passing has left a significant void in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rana's political journey was marked by his influence in the Jammu region, particularly among the Dogra community. He was recently re-elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly from the Nagrota constituency. His victory came with a substantial margin of 30,472 votes over his closest rival from the National Conference, Joginder Singh.
Political Influence and Legacy
Rana's political career began with the National Conference, where he was a trusted aide to Omar Abdullah during his tenure as Chief Minister. However, he left the party in October 2021 after more than two decades to join the BJP. His deep connections with local communities made him a prominent figure in Jammu's political scene.
Expressing grief over Rana's demise, J-K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary shared on X, "This news is especially disheartening on an auspicious day. My condolences are extended to his family and the PMO @DrJitendraSingh ji on the loss of his younger brother. Deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti."

Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed her sorrow, stating, "Shocked to hear about the sudden demise of Devinder Rana ji. Deepest condolences to his family and loved ones." Former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Amitabh Mattoo, remarked on Rana's passing, "Very sad to hear of the passing away of the larger than life Devender Rana, a remarkable entrepreneur and political leader."
BJP spokesman Sajid Yousuf noted that Rana's unexpected death has left both the party and his supporters in shock. As news spread, many gathered at his residence in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, to pay their respects and offer condolences to his family.
Community Impact and Tributes
Rana's influence extended beyond politics; he was also known for building a successful business empire from scratch. His contributions to both business and politics made him a respected figure across various sectors. The body is expected to arrive in Jammu for final rites on Friday.
AICC General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Lone, and BJP leader Chowdhary Zulfikar Ali also expressed their condolences online. Rana leaves behind his wife, two daughters, and a son.
