P Chidambaram Calls for Immediate Demand for Statehood Restoration by New Jammu and Kashmir Government
Congress leader P Chidambaram emphasised the importance of restoring Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. He urged the new government to prioritise this demand and called for support from INDIA bloc parties. Chidambaram suggested that if the central government refuses, they should seek legal recourse, as the central government had assured the Supreme Court of a swift restoration.

Chidambaram highlighted that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir has assumed powers that undermine the people's mandate. This development comes just after election results and before the new government assumes office. He expressed concern over this move in a post on X, urging immediate action.
Restoration of Statehood
The former Union minister reiterated that the first step for the new administration should be demanding statehood restoration. He stressed that all INDIA bloc parties must back this demand. If the central government remains unresponsive, he advised approaching the Supreme Court without delay.
Chidambaram reminded everyone that the Supreme Court refrained from ruling on Jammu and Kashmir's status reduction because of the central government's promise to restore statehood promptly. He warned that any delay would breach this promise and could be seen as contempt of court.
The central government's commitment to restoring statehood was a key factor in persuading the Supreme Court not to decide on the constitutionality of Jammu and Kashmir's status change. Chidambaram underscored that failing to fulfil this promise would have serious implications.
As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its new government, Chidambaram's statements highlight crucial issues regarding governance and legal commitments. The focus remains on ensuring that promises made by the central government are honoured, maintaining trust in democratic processes.
