Delhi - Over 50,000 driving licences suspended
New Delhi, Feb 22: More than 50,000 motorists have lost their driving licenses in the past two months in the national capital for violations ranging from over-speeding and drunken driving to talking on mobile while driving.
"We have seized as many as 50,636 driving licenses since we started the initiative on December 16 in pursuance of the direction by the Supreme Court's committee on road safety," Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.
While 29,239 licences have been seized for red light jumping, 17,593 have lost licenses for overspeeding. As many as 2,278 licences have been seized for talking on mobile while driving and 622 licences seized for drunken driving.
Out the total, 33,012 licences belong to Delhi and rest from neihbouring states, records revealed. "All these licences will be forwarded to respective transport departments for suspension for at least three months. These motorists are debarred from driving and they will be treated as persons without driving licence for that period," Chander added.
