Delhi LG VK Saxena Criticises Kejriwal's Highly Objectionable Claims on Yamuna Poisoning
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has criticised Chief Minister Atishi following accusations by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal claimed that poison was being mixed into the Yamuna River, suggesting an attempt at genocide in Delhi. Saxena described these allegations as highly objectionable and a threat to national security. In response, AAP accused Saxena of prioritising political interests over public welfare.

Saxena referenced media reports and a report from the Delhi chief secretary to support his stance. He stated that Kejriwal's accusations against the BJP-led Haryana government were not only misleading but also dangerous. Such claims, he argued, could incite public unrest and pose a threat to national peace and security. Saxena expressed concern over the potential for these statements to create tension between Delhi and Haryana.
Ammonia Levels in Yamuna River
The Delhi Jal Board CEO's report highlighted fluctuating ammonia levels in the Yamuna River during winter. On December 31, 2024, ammonia levels ranged from 7.5 to 10 mg/l, decreasing to 6.8-7.2 mg/l by January 27, 2025. Saxena questioned why Kejriwal remained silent when levels were highest in December but accused Haryana of poisoning the river when levels decreased.
AAP responded by highlighting the alarming ammonia levels in the Yamuna, which they claimed reached 7.2 ppm, significantly above permissible limits. They criticised Saxena for not addressing this public health crisis and accused him of shielding the BJP-led Haryana government. AAP emphasised that this issue transcends politics and is about safeguarding lives.
Political Tensions Over Water Crisis
The water crisis in Delhi escalated politically when Kejriwal accused Haryana of engaging in biological warfare. Saxena warned that such statements could lead to serious law and order issues for both Delhi and Haryana governments. He urged Atishi to uphold her constitutional responsibility as chief minister by prioritising public interests and maintaining political integrity.
Saxena advised the Delhi chief minister to avoid making misleading statements and encouraged her to guide AAP's leadership similarly for public welfare and peace. He expressed disappointment that instead of condemning Kejriwal's remarks, Atishi wrote to the Election Commission, furthering confusion among the public.
In conclusion, the ongoing dispute between Delhi's leadership and the lieutenant governor highlights significant political tensions over water management issues. The situation underscores the need for responsible communication from all parties involved to ensure public safety and maintain harmonious relations between neighbouring states.
