Arvind Kejriwal's Custody Seen as Prelude to Revolutionary Change in India
New Delhi, March 23 - In a significant development, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over allegations linked to an excise policy money-laundering case, is expected to be released soon. This assertion was made by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who voiced strong support for Kejriwal, predicting a nationwide impact following his release. Kejriwal, aged 55, was taken into custody by the ED from his official residence this Thursday and was later presented in court on Friday. The court has ordered his custody to extend until March 28.

During a visit to Shaheedi Park on Saturday to honor the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, Mann, along with Delhi ministers and supporters, expressed a firm resolve to protect democracy. The gathering also saw participation from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs and Congress leader Haroon Yusuf, who collectively raised slogans in support of Kejriwal.
Mann criticized the current state of democracy in India, suggesting that the sacrifices of historical figures like Bhagat Singh are being undermined. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to establish a dictatorship in Delhi by undermining elected governance in favor of rule by the Lieutenant Governor (LG). Mann's remarks highlighted a perceived threat to the Constitution and called for national unity against such challenges.
Furthermore, Mann emphasized that Kejriwal's incarceration does not diminish his political ideology or influence. He projected a surge of support for Kejriwal upon his release, indicating a potential shift in the political landscape. The Punjab Chief Minister also refuted the notion that a chief minister must resign if jailed under political conspiracy charges, suggesting that Kejriwal could continue to govern and influence electoral campaigning from custody.
Haroon Yusuf echoed these sentiments, affirming the solidarity of the INDIA opposition bloc amidst what he described as attempts to suffocate democracy in India. The arrest of chief ministers like Hemant Soren and now Kejriwal was highlighted as part of this concerning trend.
The events surrounding Kejriwal's arrest and the subsequent political reactions underscore a tumultuous period in Indian politics. With significant figures voicing their concerns over democracy and governance, the situation remains closely watched by both national and international observers.
