Delhi Assembly Polls: Parvesh Verma Under Scrutiny Over Fake Voter Allegations
The Election Commission has taken swift action following allegations of election code violations in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections. After a formal complaint from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Delhi Chief Minister and party leader Atishi, the Commission has instructed its chief officer in Delhi to investigate the matter promptly. This directive comes in the wake of accusations against Parvesh Verma, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s candidate for the New Delhi seat, involving potential breaches of the Model Code of Conduct and abnormalities in the electoral roll of the New Delhi Assembly constituency.

An AAP delegation, expressing their concerns, met with the Election Commission this Thursday. Their grievances included the purported improper addition and removal of names from the voter list within the New Delhi constituency. Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP chief, backed these claims with a detailed complaint against Verma, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations. The Election Commission, acknowledging the gravity of these accusations, has mandated an "Action Taken Report" from its Delhi office to ensure all proceedings align with the Model Code of Conduct and existing electoral laws.
In his complaint, Kejriwal highlighted an alarming issue: the addition of 13,000 new voters between December 15 and January 8, which he described as an unusual surge. This accusation was met with strong denial from the BJP. Kejriwal further accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral rolls by incorporating voters from neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, aiming to sway the election outcome in their favor. He controversially labeled these new additions as 'fake' voters, despite them making up 42% of Delhi's voting population. In response, BJP's Tiwari retorted that the truth of these allegations would be revealed on February 5, the day of the election.
With the Delhi Assembly elections set for February 5 and the outcomes expected by February 8, these allegations of voter list tampering have stirred significant controversy. The Election Commission's prompt response underscores the critical nature of maintaining electoral integrity, especially given the close scrutiny of voter lists as a central issue in this election cycle. The weeks leading up to the elections are likely to be marked by heightened vigilance and scrutiny as all parties brace for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle for Delhi.
