Deepak Babaria Resigns As Haryana Congress In-Charge After Election Disappointment
Following the disappointing outcome for Congress in the Haryana Assembly elections, Deepak Babaria, the party's Haryana in-charge, stepped down from his position. Babaria, who has been an influential figure within the party for over half a century, expressed his decision to resign just a day after the election results were made public, accepting accountability for the party's underperformance.

In a statement to AajTak on Monday, Babaria mentioned, "I have offered my resignation on the next day after the Haryana results were out. I am not greedy of any post. This Haryana elections results are unprecedented and there is misappropriation and malpractice in almost 15 seats in Haryana by the BJP at the behest of EVMs." He pointed out that the election results were significantly influenced by controversies in 15 crucial constituencies, which he believes contributed to the BJP's unexpected victory.
The BJP's triumph in the recent elections came as a shock to many, particularly because pre-election forecasts had predicted a different outcome. The party managed to clinch 48 out of 90 seats, thereby securing a historic third consecutive term in the state—a feat that has not been achieved by any party in Haryana since its formation in 1966. The Congress party, on the other hand, secured 37 seats, falling short of the majority mark.
Babaria has been a dedicated member of the Congress party for 52 years, holding various senior positions throughout his tenure. "I have always taken responsibility for the tasks entrusted to me by the party. I've been with the organisation for 52 years, and it's not about clinging to a position for personal gain," Babaria remarked. His commitment to the party was further demonstrated when he also offered his resignation after the party's defeat in the Delhi Lok Sabha elections.
Adding to the challenges faced during the election, Babaria disclosed that he had been dealing with serious health issues. Around September 8, he was advised to isolate himself due to a deterioration in his health condition, which consequently hindered his ability to participate actively in the election campaign. Despite these hurdles, Babaria was appointed as the AICC In-charge of Haryana on June 9, 2023, showcasing the trust and responsibility placed upon him by the party.
In conclusion, Deepak Babaria's resignation reflects a gesture of accountability and a long-standing commitment to the Congress party's ideals and objectives. With a career spanning over five decades within the party, Babaria's decision underscores the challenges and responsibilities that come with political leadership, particularly in the face of electoral setbacks. His actions set a precedent for leadership accountability in the political arena.
