Cross-Border Intensifies For 12th Straight Night As Pakistan's Kashmir Narrative at UNSC Fizzles Out

Cross-border firing along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan has intensified for the 12th consecutive night, with both sides engaging in small-arms exchanges. The skirmishes have continued to flare up in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor sectors, prompting a proportionate response from the Indian Army. Despite these ongoing clashes, Pakistan's diplomatic maneuvering at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has failed to gain traction, as its Kashmir narrative fell flat during closed-door consultations.

Cross-Border Intensifies For 12th Straight Night As Pakistan s Kashmir Narrative at UNSC Fizzles Out

Pakistan's Failed Attempt to Internationalise Kashmir at UNSC

On May 5, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, made a last-ditch effort to highlight India's actions in Jammu and Kashmir and the alleged military buildup along the border by invoking the Kashmir issue at the UNSC. The meeting was convened at Pakistan's request, seeking international intervention over what it claims are violations of international law by India. However, despite Pakistan's persistent anti-India rhetoric, the closed-door consultations did not produce any meaningful outcome.

Pakistan's attempt to steer the global conversation towards Kashmir, particularly in the aftermath of the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians, was once again rejected by the UNSC members, who reiterated that the issue must be resolved bilaterally between India and Pakistan. The international community, including the powerful 15-nation council, has time and again stressed that the Kashmir dispute is a matter for the two countries to address themselves, dismissing Pakistan's attempts to internationalize the issue.

Pakistan's Strategy to Divert Attention from Terrorism

In his UNSC address, Iftikhar also labeled India's recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as an "act of aggression," a statement that has been heavily criticized by India as an attempt to divert global focus from Pakistan's well-documented support for cross-border terrorism. Analysts argue that Pakistan's move to frame India's actions as an escalation in regional tensions is a diversionary tactic aimed at downplaying its involvement in fostering terrorism within Kashmir and other parts of India.

The Pakistani diplomat also tried to shift the narrative towards the military buildup along the border, but this too was dismissed as a baseless claim. India's ambassador to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, who had previously dealt with similar attempts by Pakistan, has been vocal in stating that no "consequential outcome" can be expected from such discussions.

A Cold Response from the International Community

In contrast to Pakistan's efforts, the international community has largely maintained a neutral stance, acknowledging India's sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir. A significant portion of the UNSC membership, including China, which historically has sided with Pakistan on Kashmir, expressed little to no support for Islamabad's claims, reiterating that the region remains a bilateral matter.

In 2019, a similar attempt by China to bring up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the UNSC also ended without any official statement or resolution. This further underscores the dwindling international support for Pakistan's stance on the matter, as the UNSC remains more focused on preventing a full-scale military confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

UN Chief's Call for Restraint Amid Rising Tensions

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced concerns about the rising tensions between India and Pakistan. On May 5, he expressed that the situation was at its "highest in years" and that the international community must do all it can to avoid a military confrontation. Guterres emphasized that targeting civilians was "unacceptable" and called for all parties to exercise "maximum restraint," particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which is believed to be a Pakistan-backed operation.

"Now is the time for maximum restraint, stepping back from the brink, and choosing dialogue over conflict," Guterres said, further underscoring the need for de-escalation at a critical juncture.

Pakistan's Escalating Role in Cross-Border Terrorism

As cross-border firing continues, questions about Pakistan's role in supporting terrorism persist. While Pakistan continues to demand international intervention, it remains a known fact that Pakistan-based terror groups have long been involved in attacks within India, including the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the recent surge in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

India has consistently called out Pakistan for harboring terror organizations that operate across the border, destabilizing the region. The recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which targeted innocent civilians, was once again linked to Pakistan-based militants, sparking outrage within India.

India's Response: A Strong Military and Diplomatic Stance

While the situation along the border remains tense, India has made it clear that it will not be intimidated by Pakistan's rhetoric or attempts at drawing international attention. India's military has maintained a robust posture along the LoC, ensuring a strong response to any provocations. On the diplomatic front, India continues to reiterate that Kashmir is an integral part of the country and that all attempts to internationalize the matter will be firmly rejected.

As the situation unfolds, the Indian government has expressed its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and has emphasized the need for international support in combating terrorism, a stance that continues to resonate with many UNSC members who have called for global unity in the fight against cross-border terrorism.

With no significant breakthroughs in the UN consultations and tensions along the border continuing to rise, the future of the India-Pakistan relationship remains uncertain. As cross-border firing persists, both militarily and diplomatically, the international community watches closely, hoping for de-escalation. However, Pakistan's continued efforts to destabilize the region through terror and its use of the UNSC platform for anti-India propaganda suggest that the situation may remain volatile for the foreseeable future.

The next steps for both India and Pakistan will require careful navigation, balancing military preparedness with diplomatic restraint. The world will be watching closely, hoping that tensions do not boil over into full-scale conflict, and that both nations ultimately choose the path of dialogue over destruction.
