Court Sentences Sanjay Roy To Life Imprisonment In RG Kar Case
The Sealdah court on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old duty doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The horrific incident occurred on August 9 of last year. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.
While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the victim's family sought the death penalty for Roy, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das observed that the case did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category, which is the criterion for awarding capital punishment. The court, therefore, sentenced Roy to life imprisonment instead.

Throughout the trial, Roy maintained his innocence, alleging that investigative agencies coerced him into signing multiple documents. To ensure order during the court proceedings, the premises were heavily fortified with nearly 500 policemen deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
Sanjay Roy was found guilty on Saturday by Judge Anirban Das of raping and murdering the postgraduate trainee doctor inside the hospital premises. The case sparked outrage across the state, leading to calls for swift justice and maximum punishment for the accused.
On Saturday, the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court pronounced Sanjay Roy guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor. The court stated that sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of the BNS had been framed against the accused.
The judge had earlier clarified on January 18 that the maximum punishment in the case could be the death penalty, while the minimum punishment could be life imprisonment.
Last year, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, were granted default bail by the same special court. This was due to the CBI's failure to file a supplementary charge sheet against the duo within 90 days of their arrest.
