Congress Warns of Dictatorship as Election Commissioner Resigns
The Congress party expressed alarm over Election Commissioner Arun Goels resignation, cautioning that the systematic weakening of independent institutions could lead to the erosion of democracy and the rise of dictatorship.
New Delhi: The Congress party expressed deep concern over the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel, warning that the systematic decimation of independent institutions could lead to the usurpation of democracy by dictatorship. Goel's resignation came just days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Concerns Over Independent Institutions
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge took to social media to express his concerns, questioning the state of the Election Commission and highlighting the fact that India now has only one Election Commissioner despite the imminent announcement of Lok Sabha elections. Kharge emphasized the need to stop the systematic decimation of independent institutions to prevent the erosion of democracy.
Questions Raised
Kharge raised several questions, including the reason behind Goel's resignation and the delay in appointing a new Election Commissioner despite the completion of the previous commissioner's tenure 23 days ago. He demanded that the Modi government provide reasonable explanations for these issues.
Transparency and Pressure
Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal also expressed concern about the health of India's democracy in light of Goel's resignation. He criticized the lack of transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged that the government exerts pressure on the institution. Venugopal cited the example of former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, who dissented against the clean chit given to the Prime Minister for violating the Model Code of Conduct during the 2019 elections and subsequently faced relentless inquiries.
Resignation Accepted
According to a notification from the Ministry of Law, President Droupadi Murmu accepted Goel's resignation with effect from Saturday. The reasons for his resignation remain unclear. Goel, a retired bureaucrat and former IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, joined the Election Commission in November 2022.
Reduced Election Commission Membership
Following the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey in February and Goel's resignation, the three-member Election Commission is now reduced to a single member, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. This raises concerns about the functioning and independence of the commission, which plays a crucial role in ensuring free and fair elections.
The Congress party's concerns over the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel highlight the importance of preserving the integrity and independence of democratic institutions. The systematic weakening of these institutions poses a threat to the very foundation of democracy and must be addressed to ensure the continued health and vitality of India's democratic system.
