Congress Advocates for Hindi but Recognises English's Role in Global Opportunities
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed support for Hindi while acknowledging the global opportunities English provides. His remarks followed Home Minister Amit Shah's reported comments on English. Gehlot stated on X, "Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi and all of us are also in favour of Hindi but English is an international language which opens new avenues in the world for everyone."

Gehlot criticised BJP-RSS members, including Shah, for opposing English despite many Union ministers' children studying abroad. He noted that this stance confuses the public. Reflecting on his own past, Gehlot mentioned that he once opposed English but recognised its necessity in today's world.
English Education Initiatives
The previous Congress administration in Rajasthan established around 3,700 Mahatma Gandhi English medium schools. This initiative aimed to enhance English education among poorer and rural communities. As a result, approximately 6.50 lakh students began receiving their education in English, according to Gehlot.
Gehlot highlighted the importance of English in the modern era of technology and Artificial Intelligence. He believes that proficiency in English can lead to success for the younger generation. "Today, in the era of computers, internet, Artificial Intelligence, the young generation can be completely successful in life through English," he said.
Political Opposition to English
The Congress leader accused the BJP government in Rajasthan of attempting to shut down these popular English medium schools. However, due to their widespread acceptance among the public, such actions were not implemented.
Gehlot's comments underscore a broader debate on language preference and education policy in India. While Hindi remains a significant cultural and linguistic identity, the role of English as a tool for global engagement continues to be a point of contention.
The discussion reflects ongoing tensions between traditional values and modern educational needs. As India navigates its linguistic landscape, balancing national pride with global competitiveness remains crucial.
