Chhattisgarh: Engineering Student Commits Suicide Over Examination Stress

A 20-year-old B.Tech student at a university near Punjipathra in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, allegedly died by suicide in a hostel room on Saturday night. Police said a note recovered from the room mentions academic pressure and concern about being a financial burden.

The student, identified as Princy Kumari from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, was in the second year of Computer Science engineering. Police said Princy was staying in the university hostel and was alone in the room when the incident reportedly took place.

Suicide note academic pressure and family expectations

Officers stated that a handwritten suicide note was found in the hostel room during the initial investigation. Police said a suicide note recovered from the room states that the student felt she could not meet her parents' expectations and was distressed about her academic performance and financial burden on the family. In the note, she reportedly apologises to her parents and says 'Sorry mummy, papa, I couldn't meet your expectations," and expresses guilt over using their savings for her education.

Family members told police that Princy had backlogs in five first-semester subjects and was preparing for re-examinations along with regular second-year papers. Relatives said this academic load had been worrying Princy, especially as key university exams were approaching.

Suicide note academic pressure and discovery in hostel

According to sources, Princy’s family tried calling around 8.30 pm on Saturday, but several attempts went unanswered. Concerned relatives then contacted the hostel warden, who went to the room and found the door locked from inside, with no reply to repeated knocks.

The warden, suspecting trouble, looked through a window and saw Princy hanging inside the room, police said. Hostel authorities then informed police, who reached the spot, completed inquest formalities, and sent the body for post-mortem examination at a local hospital.

After the autopsy, the body was handed over to Princy’s family members for final rites. Police said the precise medical cause of death will be known after the detailed post-mortem report is issued and studied as part of the case file.

Relatives informed investigators that Princy had recently asked the family to arrange about Rs 1 lakh in instalments to cover semester fees. They said the family’s finances were already stretched, which added to Princy’s anxiety about education costs and pending subjects.

Police said statements from hostel residents, university staff, and Princy’s relatives are being recorded to understand events leading to the alleged suicide. Officers added that the suicide note and other seized material are under examination, and further investigation is underway to verify all circumstances.

The case highlights how academic pressure, financial strain, and expectations from family reportedly weighed on Princy at the time. Police are relying on the post-mortem report, the suicide note, and witness statements to complete the investigation and establish the full sequence of events.
