TDPs Chandrababu Naidu Meets Amit Shah, Explores Alliance For Andhra Polls
Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss a potential alliance between the BJP and the TDP for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP was previously part of the BJP-led NDA but exited in 2018. BJP president J P Nadda also participated in the deliberations, and both parties expressed openness to collaboration, subject to a mutually acceptable seat-sharing arrangement.
In a significant political development, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to explore the possibility of forming an alliance between the BJP and the regional party for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP was previously part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but exited in 2018 when Naidu served as the state's chief minister.
BJP President Participates in Deliberations

BJP president J P Nadda also took part in the discussions, according to sources. Both parties expressed openness to joining hands, but the success of the alliance hinges on reaching a mutually acceptable seat-sharing arrangement. The second meeting between Naidu and Shah within a few months has raised hopes for a potential alliance.
TDP Emphasizes Urgency of Alliance Formation
TDP leaders stressed the importance of forming an alliance without further delay, as the elections are fast approaching. They expressed concerns that lingering uncertainty could confuse party workers and supporters. Actor Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party, a current member of the NDA, has already joined hands with the TDP and urged the BJP to follow suit. Kalyan also participated in the meeting with Shah.
Growing Indications of BJP-Biju Janata Dal Alliance
The development comes amidst growing indications that the BJP and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the ruling party in Odisha, are close to finalizing their own alliance. Senior leaders from both parties held separate meetings on Wednesday and hinted at the possibility of such a partnership.
Previous Meeting Between Naidu and BJP Leaders
Naidu had previously met with Shah and Nadda in February, sparking speculation about a potential alliance between the TDP and the BJP. However, concrete progress has yet to be made.
Differences Over Seat Allocation
Sources revealed that the two parties have had disagreements over the number of seats the BJP would contest in Andhra Pradesh, where it currently has a limited presence. The state has 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 Assembly seats, and the BJP is keen to contest between eight and 10 parliamentary constituencies.
TDP's Perspective on Seat Sharing
Sources within the TDP suggested that the BJP might contest five to six Lok Sabha seats in the event of an alliance, with the Jana Sena Party contesting three seats and the TDP contesting the remaining seats.
Challenges Posed by YSR Congress
The BJP faces an additional challenge in the form of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, the president of the YSR Congress. Reddy has consistently supported the Modi government's agenda in Parliament and enjoys a positive personal rapport with senior BJP leaders. This dynamic complicates matters for the BJP as it seeks to expand the NDA and secure a larger victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
BJP's Strategy for Electoral Success
The BJP has been actively working to expand the NDA in anticipation of the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled for April-May. With the ruling party aiming for a third term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and setting a target of winning 370 seats on its own and 400 with allies, there is a belief within the BJP that forming alliances with regional parties that share its agenda will be beneficial.
As the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh continues to evolve, the potential alliance between the TDP and the BJP remains a key factor that could shape the outcome of the upcoming elections. The success or failure of this alliance will depend on the parties' ability to overcome their differences and reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
