Central Railway's 63-Hour Mega Block to Disrupt Mumbai Train Services
The Central Railway has announced a significant operational update that will impact the Mumbai network, particularly affecting the daily commute of lakhs of individuals who rely on local and long-distance train services. Starting from May 30 at midnight, a 63-hour mega block will be initiated to facilitate platform extension and widening works at key stations including CSMT and Thane. This development is poised to disrupt the routine of countless commuters, urging the railways to advise against non-essential travel on local trains during this period.

Rajneesh Goyal, the divisional railway manager of Central Railways' Mumbai division, detailed the schedule and objectives of the upcoming mega blocks during a press conference. A 63-hour block will commence from Thursday midnight focusing on the widening of platforms 5 and 6 at Thane station. Following this, a 36-hour block will start from Friday midnight for extending platforms 10 and 11 at CSMT. These enhancements are aimed at accommodating facilities such as escalators or wider staircases for foot over bridges, improving overall passenger convenience.
Impact on Train Services
Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of Central Railways, highlighted the extensive impact on train services. A total of 72 mail-express trains along with 956 suburban trains on the main and Harbour corridors are set to be cancelled from Friday to Sunday. Additionally, several trains will be short-terminated or originate from alternative stations including Wadala, Dadar, Thane, Pune, Panvel, and Nashik. Central Railway's proactive measures include requesting additional bus services from BEST and MSRTC to mitigate inconvenience for passengers.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The mega blocks are not just about immediate disruptions but are part of a larger plan for infrastructural improvement. At CSMT, platforms 10 and 11 have been extended to accommodate longer trains, enhancing capacity and reducing congestion. Similarly, Thane's platforms 5 and 6 are being widened by 2-3 metres to manage overcrowding more effectively. These upgrades signify Central Railway's commitment to long-term benefits for commuters, despite the short-term inconveniences.
Operational Adjustments
During the block period, significant adjustments will be made to train operations. Central Railway plans to short-terminate and originate hundreds of local as well as long-distance trains from various stations to manage the flow of passengers efficiently. Despite these efforts, a total of 930 local trains will remain cancelled across the three days, with provisions made to operate a limited number of services amidst the disruptions.
The Central Railway's undertaking of these mega blocks underscores an essential stride towards enhancing Mumbai's railway infrastructure. While the immediate effect may pose challenges for daily commuters, the long-term improvements are aimed at facilitating a more efficient and comfortable travel experience. Commuters are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly during this period and cooperate with the railway administration's efforts towards infrastructural enhancement.
