BSF’s Braveheart Women on Ganga: A 2,325 KM Odyssey for Cleanliness and Empowerment
For the first time in history, an all-women's team from the Border Security Force (BSF) will embark on a daring journey, rafting approximately 2,325 kilometers from Gangotri in Uttarakhand to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.
This expedition, beginning on November 2 and lasting 53 days, will traverse five states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, culminating at Ganga Sagar on December 24. This adventure aims to spread awareness about Ganga's cleanliness and to promote women's empowerment.

The journey will start in Gangotri and proceed to Devprayag in Uttarakhand. At Devprayag Ghat, BSF Inspector General Raja Babu Singh will wave off the expedition team. The first major stop will be Haridwar on November 4, where Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will join the event. The BSF brass band will welcome the team at Chandi Ghat in Haridwar before they continue their journey downstream.
Purpose of the Expedition
The mission focuses on raising awareness about preserving the purity of the Ganga River while also highlighting women's empowerment. The 60-member BSF team includes 20 women rafters who, through their courage and commitment, aim to inspire women nationwide. This expedition underscores Ganga's cultural and spiritual significance and showcases the important role of women in society.
Focus on Ganga Cleanliness and Women's Empowerment
Along their route, the BSF team will stop at various locations to engage with riverside communities. For example, on November 9, the team will reach Bulandshahr to conduct awareness programmes with the locals. Through these interactions, the BSF team will promote messages about Ganga's cleanliness, environmental protection, and the strength of women in shaping a prosperous society.
Several programmes will be held throughout the journey:
- Ganga Aarti: Honouring Ganga's religious significance.
- Prabhat Pheri : A community event to increase local involvement and raise cleanliness awareness.
- Bhajans and Welcome Ceremonies: These will support and motivate the team along the way.
- Finale in Ganga Sagar in West Bengal on December 24
This expedition will conclude at Ganga Sagar on December 24, 2024. Through this mission, BSF aims to spread the message of a clean and prosperous Ganga alongside a strong India. The journey not only promotes Ganga's purity but also highlights women's vital role in a cleaner, empowered nation, reinforcing that women's contributions are key to India's strength and progress.
