British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis met with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, December 4th, in Guwahati. The meeting resulted in productive discussions covering various significant areas of collaboration, including sustainability, health, and education, between the northeastern state of Assam and the United Kingdom.

Promoting a Green Economy

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of closer collaboration between India and the UK to promote a green economy. He highlighted the potential for cooperation in electric vehicles and tree plantations. The British High Commissioner expressed his admiration for the success of the world record-making Amrit Brikshya plantation program, which aims to plant trees on a massive scale.

Opportunities for Assamese Students

Vrindavani Vastra: A Cultural Treasure

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the emotional significance of Vrindavani Vastra in Assamese society. Vrindavani Vastra is a traditional drape woven by Assamese weavers in the 16th century under the guidance of Srimanta Sankardeva, a revered Vaishnavite scholar. The drape depicts the childhood activities of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. Parts of the original Vrindavani Vastra are currently housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Guimet Museum in Paris. The Chief Minister suggested enhancing access for scholars and researchers to study and appreciate this cultural treasure.

Strengthening UK-Assam Cooperation

British High Commissioner Ellis expressed his delight in meeting with Chief Minister Sarma and discussing potential areas of cooperation between the UK and Assam. He acknowledged the remarkable developments taking place in the northeastern region of India. In response, Chief Minister Sarma conveyed his pleasure in meeting the High Commissioner and appreciated his encouraging words. He emphasized the remarkable transformation taking place in the North East under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister expressed his eagerness to foster a strong partnership with the UK in various areas of mutual interest.

The meeting between British High Commissioner Ellis and Assam Chief Minister Sarma reflects the growing relationship between India and the UK, particularly in the areas of sustainability, health, education, and cultural preservation. The discussions held during the meeting lay the groundwork for future collaborations that will benefit both Assam and the UK.
