Bihar BJP Workers Burn Effigies in Protest Against Alleged Anti-Rajput Remarks by RJD Leaders
On Wednesday, BJP workers in Bihar burnt effigies of RJD leaders Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Yadav. This was a protest against remarks made by their party's MP Manoj Jha last week, which were perceived as disrespectful to the Rajput community. The controversy has sparked heated debates across social media platforms.
The political landscape in Bihar was rife with tension on Wednesday, September 27th, as BJP workers expressed their displeasure at remarks made by RJD's MP Manoj Jha. The BJP workers took to the streets of Patna and burnt effigies of RJD president Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Yadav, who is also the state's deputy chief minister. This aggressive demonstration was a protest against what they perceived as an insult to Rajputs or Thakurs, a prominent community in India.
Allegations Against Manoj Jha

The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Manoj Jha on the floor of the Rajya Sabha last week. In his address, which has since gone viral on social media platforms, he recited 'Thakur Ka Kuan', a poem penned by renowned Dalit writer Om Prakash Valmiki. An academician by profession and one of the most recognized spokespersons for his party, Jha used this platform to make an impassioned plea for securing women's rights from weaker sections of society.
Contentious Remarks Spark Protest
Jha alleged that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam failed to ensure these rights while allocating 33 per cent seats in Parliament and state assemblies to women. However, it was not this plea for gender equality that sparked outrage among BJP workers but rather their interpretation that his recitation denigrated Thakurs.
BJP Demands Apology
Among those leading the protest against Jha's speech was former minister Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu who claimed that Tejashwi Yadav had conspired with his MP to insult Thakurs within Parliament itself. He demanded an apology from both Yadav and Jha stating that the anger visible on the streets of Bihar would not subside until such an apology was tendered.
The BJP workers' demonstration and their demand for an apology reflect the heightened sensitivities around caste-based remarks in Indian politics. The incident has underscored how references to caste, even when made in a literary context as with Jha's recitation, can be construed as political slights and trigger strong reactions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatility that underlies India's political sphere where caste-based comments are met with severe backlash. It also brings to light the need for careful deliberation before making any statements that could potentially offend or marginalize any community. As politicians continue to navigate these complex dynamics, it is hoped that they will prioritize fostering unity and respect over divisive rhetoric.
