BJP-led NDA Wins All 5 Seats In Assam Bypolls
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a sweeping victory in Assam's by-elections, winning all five contested seats: Bongaigaon, Dholai, Sidli, Behali, and Samaguri. This triumph is seen as a reinforcement of the BJP's dominance in the state and sets a positive tone for the party's preparations for the 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
Key Victories and Candidates
In Dholai, Nihar Ranjan Das secured a win with a margin of 9,098 votes. Diplu Ranjan Sarma achieved a significant lead in Samaguri, while Diganta Ghatowar defeated his Congress rival by 9,051 votes in Behali. The NDA partners also celebrated victories; UPPL's Nirmal Kumar Brahma won Sidli, and AGP's Diptimayee Choudhury triumphed in Bongaigaon with substantial margins.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the victory as an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for governance and development. The BJP fielded candidates in Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai. Meanwhile, its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL), contested Bongaigaon and Sidli respectively.
Congress Reflects on Strategy
Despite their loss, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) noted an increase in their vote share. Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi acknowledged the tough competition and unilateral actions by the administration during elections. He hinted at strategic missteps by Congress, particularly the absence of alliances that made these by-polls challenging for them.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who served as the BJP's co-incharge for the Jharkhand assembly elections, expressed deep personal pain over the party's defeat.
Sarma emphasized the importance of respecting the people's mandate, calling it the cornerstone of democracy. "The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we achieved victories in all five by-elections in Assam," he shared in a post on X.
He also acknowledged the dedication of BJP workers in Jharkhand, stating, "I have witnessed the unwavering commitment and relentless efforts of our Karyakartas, who gave their all in this election."
